Wanting Love (Blend)

Since Part 2 of the “Why Can’t We Be Blends” series (see introduction here) is coming soon, I thought I’d drop a little refresher via one of my prouder moments from the first volume. It pairs Cherrelle & Alexander O’Neal’s classic “Saturday Love” with Romeo Erotic’s beautiful remix of Starpoint’s “Wanting You”.

Wedits

I know I can speak for Macabee (for those still getting acquainted, the other half of Its Overture, myself being RiVerse) when I say that the highest priority of this blog is to focus on things we love.  At the same time, to fully represent how and what we spin, we can’t ignore an often necessary element of DJing: playing straight up pop music.

The epitome of such necessities is the wedding.  Weddings are the kind of DJ jobs where you become the most selfless (if you’re doing your job right) and REEEALLLY exemplify the “DJ as humble servant” role, rather than the artist or tastemaker role that most of us like to fancy ourselves as.  But since we can’t, in good conscience, phone it in when we spin such events, we often do edits of said pop songs to make them more mix friendly, more concise, less corny, etc.

So to share the functionality with our fellow working class DJs, we’ll be posting some of these edits from time to time. Here are three for starters……

Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy (Its Overture Edit)
INXS - Need You Tonight (Its Overture Edit)
EMF - Unbelievable (Its Overture Edit)

Now to be clear, many of these more pop-friendly songs that I’m speaking of can also be favorites of ours. The distinction is that in contrast to the aim of most posts on this site, we’re well aware that we’re not “putting you on” to the under appreciated merits of INXS’ biggest hit…….

Dance Edits

klumpfisk-1

For each of these 3 edits we took a dance-floor-friendly track and cut down some repetitions , letting us “get to the good stuff” much sooner. Here, the “good stuff” is the disco chant breakdown of ‘Body Crash’, the frenetic pitched-vocal peak of ‘West Side’, and the horn-heavy mariachi madness of ‘Hey U.’

Buy Now - Body Crash (Laidback Luke Remix) (Its Overture Edit)
Basement Jaxx - Hey U (Switch & Sinden Remix) (Its Overture Edit)
Studio - West Side (Klumpfisk Remix) (Its Overture Edit)

100% FAKE BLOOD

April 29th, 2010 by RiVerse

trueblood

Here’s a blend pairing Risk One’s nasty Bmore edit of Crystal Water’s “100% Pure Love” with Fake Blood’s now classic remix of Little Boots’ “Stuck On Repeat”…..I came across the connection while spinning one night and after a botched attempt of pulling it off live, I did what any self respecting person would do in 2010….use a computer!

100% Fake Blood (Its Overture Blend) by Its Overture

Also, True Blood’s an amazing show and I’m amped for season 3 which starts in June…..the superficial link between that factoid and the blend was enough for me to give it a shout.

FIVE BORO BASS MIX + BASE!!! PARTY

April 15th, 2010 by RiVerse

base-alt4-copy-small

As you can tell from the above flyer, Macabee and I are spinning at Fontana’s this Saturday with the inimitable Voidstar. The aim is to play all types of crazy, bass-centric fire (hence the title).

Over the past few weeks we’ve put out some mixes to help promote and prepare for the gig, starting with Macabee’s The Scrubstep Mix (which set the bar pretty high) and continuing with two(!!) nasty “Base”-related mixes from Voidstar.

So to close it out, I put together this short (as in under 8 minute) mix combining the genre I’m most familiar with (hip hop) with one that I was probably the least familiar with (drum and bass). But with the help of my aforementioned counterparts, I’ve been steadily receiving a crash course in the best of Drum and Bass and all its correlating sub-genres. Recognizing the long standing link between itself and rap, I grabbed a bunch of New York anthems, made some remixes and blends and came up with this mix……

5 Boro Bass Mix by Its Overture

1. New York State Of Mind (Its Overture’s DnB Edit) - Nas (+) Mr Majestik (drums) - Calibre & High Contrast
2. Liquid Swords - Gza (+) Tough At The Top (drums) - EZ Rollers
3. Bucktown - Smif-N-Wessun (+) Tough At The Top (drums, bass) - EZ Rollers
4. Vital Nerve (Its Overture’s DnB Edit) - Company Flow (+) Railing (drums) - Roni Size
5. Takeover instrumental - Jay-Z/Kanye West (+) Overload - Future Cut

…if you download all 4 of our mixes you’ll have a sense of about 50% of what will be going down on Saturday…..so come out to hear the rest!!!

Give Me Your Love (Its Overture Edit)

sylvia-for-site
In addition to mixes, we’re gonna be posting a fair amount of our edits and blends as well. Though many will be tailored for fellow DJs, hopefully most will be a good listen for all.

So to set it off with a little class, this is a song by Sylvia Striplin that I love (no pun), produced by the legendary Roy Ayers, and whose original structure isn’t very fun to mix with. Went short and sweet with it…..

Lonely Island - Boombox (Its Overture & Voidstar Remix)

March 16th, 2010 by Macabee

Last year Its Overture and Voidstar remixed The Lonely Island’s Boombox, extracting the punchlines and leaving the dance floor heat. This past weekend, SNL aired their music video. Here’s our edit…

The Scrubstep Mix

With the hopes of keeping content flowing consistently, here’s a quick mix I recently came up with. I’ve been using the term Scrubstep to describe a fairly new crop of Dubstep-y tracks that generally favor lush and blissed-out sounds over the genre’s typical dark and grimy ones.

1. Hello (Whole Sick Remix) (It’s Overture Edit) - AC Slater
2. Black And Blue (Caspa Remix) - Miike Snow
3. Animal (Jakwob Remix) - Penguin Prison
4. Hyph Mngo - Joy Orbison
5. White Lies (Rusko’s Euphoria Mix) - Mr. Hudson
6. I Remember (Caspa Remix) - Deadmau5
7. You Used To Hold Me (Nero Remix) - Calvin Harris
8. Rabbit Heart (Slof Man & Jor-One Remix) - Florence & The Machine
9. You’re On My Mind Baby - Rusko
10. You’re Not Alone (Kill Light Remix) - Olive

Homegrown Mix Vol. 1

March 3rd, 2010 by RiVerse

homegrown-cover-vol-1-400

In between our “official” mixes which (due to our neurotic nit picking process) take forever to complete, we’ll hopefully have a more consistent flow of these quick and humble little mixes, going volume by volume and lazily titled Homegrown Mixes. This first one consists primarily of instrumental house, disco and italo songs that I’m a fan of. It’s not perfect but that’s kind of the point. And considering its fast turnaround time, I’m pretty happy with it….

1. House Of Tribe - Jazzy Jeff
2. Gabryelle - DJ Technic
3. Tonight (Short Edit) - The Juan Maclean
4. Fine Mouche (DOP Mix) - Brigitte Fontaine
5. Dysk Dzokej (Zambon Disco Edit) - Franek Kimono
6. Let’s Be Young - Quentin Harris
7. Spaghetti Circus - Still Going
8. Feeling For You (Les Rhythmes Digitales Mix) - Cassius
9. Planet Deep (Solid Groove Mix) - Only Freak
10. Glass House - Eli Escobar
11. Life Is A Jungle - Kikrokos
